Unveiling Excellence: The "Brazilian World of Warcraft Classic Rankings"
As an avid gamer and a passionate data enthusiast, I embarked on a journey that combined my two great loves — World of Warcraft Classic and data analysis. The result? A unique project that showcases the best Brazilian guilds and players in the world of Azeroth. Today, I’m excited to share the story of this project and the insights it brings to the gaming community.
Project Overview
The goal was clear: to create a data dashboard using Warcraft Logs, a treasure trove of data from WoW Classic raids. This dashboard would spotlight the incredible talent within the Brazilian World of Warcraft Classic community. I wanted to give recognition to the guilds and players who’ve made their mark on the competitive raiding scene.
The default WarcraftLogs website is global, without a way to filter people based on nationality. Since most Brazilian people play with different latencies, and normally play together instead of playing in international guilds, the community lacked a way on how to compare between itself easily.
Project Development
The journey began with collecting and analyzing data from countless Warcraft Logs. I needed to sift through an avalanche of combat logs, parses, and rankings to extract meaningful insights.
Key Features and Achievements
- Player Rankings by Parse Percentile: The dashboard showcases the top 20 players in each class based on parse percentile averages across all phase bosses. It highlights the consistency and excellence of these players in mastering their classes.
- Player Rankings by DPS per Boss: In addition to overall class performance, the dashboard recognizes the top 20 players by DPS on each boss encounter. This reveals the outstanding players who excel in specific challenges.
Besides the explicit rankings, more info about the best guilds, best kill times, best classes overall can also be achieved by just browsing through the dashboard.
Challenges Faced
Undertaking the project was not without its fair share of challenges. From resource limitations to mastering unfamiliar front-end technologies, these hurdles tested my determination and problem-solving skills.
Resource Constraints
The first and perhaps the most substantial challenge was the need to execute the project on a tight budget. To keep costs at bay, I devised a clever strategy. I designed the project in a way that required significant resources only for the data ingestion process, which I managed on my own PC. This meant that the ongoing project, including data storage and hosting, had to be resource-efficient.
Resource-Efficient Design
I set up a PostgreSQL database on a free-tier virtual machine with minimal CPU (0.1 CPU) and RAM (256MB). This resource-conscious approach allowed me to store support data efficiently without incurring high operational costs. It required careful optimization of data storage and queries, a task I took on willingly.
Front-End Learning Curve
Another challenge was the need to develop a static website to host the dashboard. While I had a strong grasp of data analysis and back-end technologies, front-end development was a realm I needed to explore further. This required an investment of time and effort into studying different aspects of front-end development, which was a learning journey in itself.
Impact
I shook the Brazilian WoW Classic scene to its core. The "Brazilian World of Warcraft Classic Rankings" project has ignited a fire within the gaming community. Now, every hardcore, semi-hardcore, and casual guild aspires to secure a spot in the ranks. Players are dedicating themselves to climbing the ladder and reaching the pinnacle of excellence.
What’s truly heartwarming is witnessing the transformation in the community’s mindset. The project has become a topic of conversation on streams and gaming forums. Future Plans
This project is just the beginning. I plan to expand the dashboard’s features and insights. An explicit guild rank would be HUGE as well expanding the data it's analyzed to reach different levels of insight would be huge for different competitions.
